Unique Music Resource Offers New Ways to Inspire Young Singers

PORTLAND, Ore.—A new resource offering over 330 Scripture-based, liturgically appropriate songs for children is now available from OCP. Crafted by experienced educators, Rise Up & Sing, Third Edition provides music carefully chosen to match the abilities of elementary school-aged children.

“Singing is one of the primary ways the faithful actively participate in the liturgy,” says Tom Tomaszek, Director of Artist Relations and Product Development for OCP. ”When we selected the music for Rise Up & Sing, Third Edition, we considered the unique physical and developmental characteristics of young children. Music ministers, teachers and religious educators will find this songbook extremely helpful.”

Rise Up & Sing, Third Edition includes music by trusted children’s composers Mark Friedman, Janet Vogt, Jack Miffleton, Christopher Walker, Hi God series creator Carey Landry and many others music. The new resource is designed to help educators in the following ways:

• Makes it easy for children to read the music—large print format
• Provides excellent teaching and accompaniment resources (vocal and instrumental CD recording libraries)
• Presents songs for the entire school year, Sacramental moments (Baptism, Reconciliation, First Eucharist), Vacation Bible School, special prayer times, Bible stories and more
• Combines keyboard arrangements and guitar chords for every song in one convenient accompaniment book
• Helps users find the right music with a variety of indexes: topical, liturgical, Scriptural, alphabetical index of hymn tunes, pedagogical index and more
• Assists in teaching basic music-reading skills when combined with Rise Up and Read Music

“It’s the perfect resource for integrating music education and worship,” says children’s music composer Jack Miffleton.

Visit ocp.org/RUAS3 for the Rise Up & Sing, Third Edition index, song samples from the collection, complete pricing and more. The Assembly Book is available now, offered at $7.75, with a special price on quantities over 50. The Accompaniment Book and CD libraries will be available this fall.

Marywood Retreat Center Hosts First Annual Music Ministry Retreat

St. Johns, Fla. – The Marywood Retreat Center of the Catholic Diocese of Saint Augustine will host the first annual Music Ministry Retreat beginning with dinner on the evening of Monday, July 20 and concluding with a music-filled Mass on the morning of Friday, July 24. Marywood is located at 1714-5 State Road 13 in St. Johns, Fla. – just seven miles south of Jacksonville off of San Jose Blvd. and I-295. The retreat, which is open to people of all faith communities, will bring renowned musicians from across the country to North Florida. The retreat welcomes everyone involved in any way with making music in their church. Whether you are a choir director, member of a choir, musician, cantor or member of a liturgy committee – this event is designed just for you.

While a large convention is often advantageous in its ability to bring astounding numbers to an event, the retreat atmosphere “affords everyone time for absorbing the presentations, and also allows time for private reflection and prayer,” said Grayson Warren Brown, internationally known liturgical composer and organizer of the retreat.

In addition to Grayson Warren Brown who has become one of the most sought-after presenters in the country today, retreat presenters will include

Jennifer Pascual, Ph.D., director of music at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City;

Jaime Cortez, composer, recording artist and minister of music from Mesa, Ariz., whose fluency in both English and Spanish allow for a wide variety in his compositions.

Joining these presenters will also be Valencia Howard who serves as the director of music at St. Paul Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. and whose exceptional talent was recognized as she began performing solo pieces at the age of four.

The cost for the retreat is $204 for commuters, $334 for a double occupancy room, and $424 for a private room and includes room, meals and retreat registration. To register, visit www.marywoodcenter.org or call 1-888-287-2539. Space is limited so register early!

Here you will find established and independent publishers of liturgical and para-liturgical music suitable for Sunday Mass, adoration, prayer gatherings, CCD events and more. Links to these publishers may be found at www.gvonline.net/02FILES/musicministryresources.htm.

This blog will introduce new projects that come from these publishers, and introduce you to new publishers as they are submitted to us.

Established publishers listed on the site include
OCP (Oregon Catholic Press)
Spirit and Song (a subsidiary of OCP)
WLP (World Library Publications)
GIA Publications

Independent publishers include the following:

Adoration for a New Springtime
Adoration for the New Springtime was created to help lay parishioners (that is, normal, everyday people like you) experience the beauty and power of Eucharistic Adoration at their home parish, with their local prayer group or youth group, by providing a complete contemporary soundtrack that includes all of the "fixed" parts listed above in their proper order, plus several other songs written by some of today's most talented Catholic artists. To encourage participation of your whole group, a full-size Songsheet Master is included with the CD, and may be copied up to 50 times. There is no other worship aid on the market today that provides such a complete solution to starting Eucharistic Adoration at your home parish! Created and performed by Paul Hilts.

Modern Psalter
Modern Psalter is a response to the Church's desire to more closely identify the Psalms, the ancient prayers of Israel, with the rest of the liturgy. It is a contemporary approach to the ancient beauty of the psalms, the same psalms that King David wrote... the same psalms that Jesus quoted and prayed. The psalter is transmitted via podcast and with .pdf files so that you can have access to this psalter anywhere in the world! An ancient hymnal translated by modern technology. Songwriters Michael James Mette, Bryan Murdaugh and Joel Stein provide verbatim psalm responses in a contemporary setting.

Nicholas-Maria Publishers
Gate of Heaven (A Collection of Catholic Hymnody)

Gate of Heaven is a collection of original post-Conciliar Catholic hymnody in the Roman and Eastern Catholic tradition. The recorded music comprising Gate of Heaven presently consists of three CDs, Parts I, II and III. Although Gate of Heaven is undeniably contemporary in style and influence, it draws greatly from the Gregorian chant tradition, especially through its oftentimes linear, chant-like movement. The ancient modes oftentimes provide its melodic basis and harmonic structure. Mary Oberle Hubley is the composer. An Accompaniment Edition and Melody (pew) edition of the Gate of Heaven collection are available through the catalog, where hymncards of specific individual hymns may also be accessed.

United Catholic Artists
United Catholic Artists publishes Praise The Lord! The Complete Collection of Seasonal Psalms. It is a collection of all 24 seasonal psalms written with exact, verbatim Lectionary text approved by USCCB and ICEL. Sheet music, audio CDs and a video version that features each psalm along with visuals and words along the bottom are available from the website.
